In the early days the Portsmouth speedway team raced at the Wessex Stadium in Coopers Garden. Their first meeting was held on 10th August 1929, with a second one following a week later and, remarkably, a programme for that meeting has survived and is shown below.

  The final meeting at the Wessex Stadium was held on 29th November 1930 and there was a lapse in speedway racing for 5 years.

  On 25th May 1931 a Greyhound Race track opened on Target Road, but it was not until 2nd October 1935 that speedway events were held at the track. The final speedway race was held on 29th September 1937 when Portsmouth defeated Reading 36-26
